Wrestling makes the cut, grapples back in reckoning for 2020 Olympics

St Petertsburg: Three months after being shown the door from sports’ grandest celebration, wrestling came roaring back in contention for the 2020 edition of the Olympics.
Wrestling, along with squash and a joint baseball-softball bid, was shortlisted by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board from a total of eight sports that staked their claim for the solitary open spot in the quadrennial spectacle.
Sports that couldn’t make the cut include inline speed skating, karate, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu.
Reportedly, the  IOC Executive Board voted by secret ballot over several rounds, with wrestling winning on the first, garnering eight of the 14 votes.
The fate of wrestling, one of the oldest Olympic sport, now hinges on the consent of full IOC assembly, that will make a final decision on September 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
