New Delhi: After a brief lull, investigations in
the spot-fixing scandal have gained momentum. As has been the nature of
the probe so far, the revelations go well beyond spot-fixing per se.
Under scanner are Rajasthan Royals, a team that dramatically won
the inaugural edition of the IPL, and Chennai Super Kings, a side that
has won the IPL on maximum occasions.
With three of its players behind bars for indulging in spot fixing
and its famous owners under betting cloud, the reputation of Rajasthan
Royals, is likely to take a considerable beating.
The fact that RR are led by Rahul Dravid, a man of unimpeachable integrity, induces the element of irony in the mix.
However, given the intelligent sportsman that he is, it’s highly
unlikely that ‘The Wall’ didn’t have a whiff of what was going around in
the side, even so when one of his team owners has confessed to having
placed bets in the cash-rich league.
With RR medium-pacer Siddharth Trivedi claiming he was approached
by bookies, chances of Dravid being completely oblivious to the
off-field developments do not hold much ground, his professed ignorance
coming as more shock than surprise.
Having represented India for as long as he had, Dravid knows the
way things function in BCCI better than most of us, and given the
student he is, it’s almost impossible to believe he was unaware of what
was going around in Rajasthan Royals camp.
With fresh skeletons relentlessly tumbling out of the IPL closet,
its incumbent upon Dravid, given the respect he commands across the
cricketing firmament, to speak up.
