Pune: Already laid low by the IPL spot-fixing
controversy, Indian sports plunged to new lows recently with two archers
being caught having sex in a national camp.
The incident occurred at Army Sports Institute (ASI) here, the
venue for the national camp, when recurve archers Pawan Xalco of
Lohardaga and Gunjan Kumari of Bokaro, both 21 and former cadets of
Jamshedpur-based Tata Archery Academy (TAA),were caught in “compromising
position” from latter’s room.
The ‘culprits,’ both from Jharkhand have been issued marching
orders by (ASI) on disciplinary grounds, while Archery Association of
India has banned the duo from participating in national or international
events.
Virendra Sachdeva, treasurer of Archery Association of India, has called the incident “shameful.”
The matter is now pending with Discipline Committee, while the duo have, in writing, accepted their indiscretion.
Sources say the archers were part of the national preparatory camp
for the World Cup (II), scheduled at Antalya in Turkey from June 10-16.
