New Delhi: British-Indian businessman Raj
Kundra, who co-owns IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, has confessed to
placing bets on his own team in the just concluded season of the
cash-rich league.
Kundra, who was probed on Wednesday for about 12 hours, was called
for questioning today as well, during which he admitted to have placed
bets on his own franchise.
Making the announcement, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar
revealed Kundra placed bets through friend and another RR co-owner Umesh
Goenka, and lost a lot of money in betting.
The top cop also termed Goenka a bookie.
The revelation also exposed Kundra’s doublespeak,
who has, ever since the controversy broke out, taken the moral high
ground and had promised strict action against the tainted cricketers.
As early as Thursday morning, a defiant Kundra blamed media for sensationalising the issue.
“Is there an arrest warrant? I am back home in Mumbai. Kindly let
Delhi crime branch do their work. media stop using derogatory
statements,” his last tweet read.
Joining him in his defence was actor-wife Shilpa Shetty, who accused media of running a sustained campaign against them.
“Also to all the BREAKING NEWS channels 'Don't get into
assumptions, we too are most curious to know who the culprit is!” she
tweeted.
Also, recent media reports suggest Shilpa Shetty is under scanner too over alleged betting charges.
Sources in Delhi Police say Shetty placed bets on a match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
More details are awaited.
