IPL spot-fixing: Sreesanth’s bail plea rejected

New Delhi: Few hours after Vindu Dara Singh and Gurunath Meiyappan got bail, a Delhi court rejected the bail pleas of S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila on Tuesday and extended their judicial custody of all three including Ankit Chavan, till June 18. The court has also rejected the bail pleas of some of the bookies who have been charged in the case.

According to sources, Sreesanth has been praying and keeping fasts in Tihar Jail for his bail. Read: IPL spot-fixing: Sreesanth keeping fasts and praying in jail as Vindu Dara Singh and Meiyappan get bail

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Delhi Police is believed to have established a link with the D-gang. Reports also suggest that Delhi Police is mulling to invoke Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the three arrested cricketers and all the bookies.

Police sources said the stringent provisions of MCOCA were invoked to strengthen the case against those involved in the spot-fixing scandal.

According to the provisions of the Act, confessions made before an officer of rank above Deputy Commissioner of Police are admissible as evidence in a court of law. MCOCA was formulated in 1994 to tackle organised crime which abetted narco-terrorism and raised huge amount of illegal money.

Notably, the player is kept in Jail number 1 in Tihar and he has been given special permission to carry a bed sheet. Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila were arrested last month after their names surfaced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing scam.
