French Open 2013: Roger Federer survives scare to record 900th tour win



Paris: Swiss legend Roger Federer prevailed in a five-setter against 15th seed French Gilles Simonen en route his 900th tour win. By virtue of this win, the 17-time majors winner also entered his 36th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Federer’s 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win was also his 58th, and with it, the 31-year old took his career five-set record to 22-1.
Gilles gave a tough fight to his much- fancied opponent, the French breaking Federer’s service in the seventh game of the second set. However, second seed won break points in the sixth and eighth game of the fourth set to bring the game to 2-2.
Thereafter, Federer reeled off seven straight games to take control of the decider at 3-0, and claimed victory on a second match point when Simon slapped a backhand wide.
Federer will be up against 6th seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the semi-finals.
