Birmingham: The India-Pakistan game in Champions
Trophy has been reduced to a 40-over affair, after intermittent showers
left Edgbaston soggy and slippery for better part of Saturday morning
here.
The truncated tie means the mandatory powerplay overs have been
reduced to 8 from 10, and two bowling powerplays will be of 4 overs
each, instead of five.
Earlier, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to bowl first on
a flat deck after winning the toss on a grey, cloudy morning.
Having disrupted the game once, the rains returned soon after to
leave the match slightly in favour of India, who overcame solid
rearguard action by Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez, after opener Nasir
Jamshed left in the third over.
Hafeez and Akmal added 46 for the second wicket, before Dhoni
caught Hafeez off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Ashwin struck soon after,
dismissing a well set Akmal, who was taken by Virat Kohli at leg slip by
a deflection off Dhoni’s left thigh.
India would look to win this contest to enter semis on a high,
while Pakistan would like to keep their record against India intact in
the Champions Trophy.
