Sports Desk: England’s rising batting star
Joe Root is ready for the Aussie challenge, particularly for a duel with
certain David Warner; only this time the two will lock horns on the
cricket field.
Warner, who was suspended by Cricket Australia after he threw a
punch at Root in a bar after Australia’s loss to England in the recently
concluded Champions Trophy, is eligible to play the first Ashes Test,
beginning in 10 days’ time at Trent Bridge.
Speaking to mediapersons, Root, who impressed all with his
technique and temperament in the eight-nation event, said, “It's Cricket
Australia's decision whether they pick him (Warner) or not, but I would
have no problems if he plays. What happened, happened. It wasn't an
ideal situation, but I can't change what went on. He's apologised and
I've accepted it.”
“I've moved on and it's all about the cricket for me. I have to
concentrate on what goes on out there in the middle and not worry about
things out of my control,” the 22-year old added.
Root, who is slated to walk out in company of captain Alastair Cook
to open the English innings in Ashes, is also relishing the chance to
share an Ashes dressing room with the returning Kevin Pietersen.
“That will be fantastic. I've not spoken much to him, but I am
looking forward to doing so. He's a great player and it will be a good
opportunity to get to know him better,” he added.
Nick Compton's poor form left the door ajar for Root to start as
opener in the first Test and keep the place for the whole Ashes
campaign.
Root has so far scored 424 runs from six Tests, including a century
and two fifties. The selectors will hope he continues to get runs in
the four-day warm-up match with Essex in Chelmsford, starting Sunday.
