Sports Desk: Success
comes at a price, and with far share of responsibility. As public
figures, sportsmen are required to conduct themselves with dignity
befitting their exalted status.
However, America, that celebrates its Independence Day today, has
thrown up quite a few athletes who, despite their grand success stories,
will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
We take a look a some:
Wife-swapping
In 1972, Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich, pitchers in America’s famous basketball team New York Yankees, swapped wives.
To top it all, they announced it unabashedly in the media as well.
Mike Tyson
A champion boxer wit allegations ranging from sexual harassments to
rapes, Tyson bit the ear of Evander Holyfield during one of their
bouts.
Tiger Woods
His image of the Golf legend and a committed family man received
some serious beating in 2009, when a series of transgressions surfaced,
exposing his numerous flings, and eventually culminating in a
financially-draining divorce.
Lance Armstrong
The legendary cyclist, who won 7 consecutive Tour de France after coming back from cancer, admitted to doping in 2012.
This was, arguably, the most sensational sporting controversies of modern times.
John McEnroe
A perennial controversy kid, McEnroe was notorious for his unsavoury rants against the umpires.
Recently, McEnroe stirred fresh row after he made his displeasure known on air.
