Bangalore: Former
Indian cricketer and captain Rahul Dravid’s father, Sharad Dravid,
passed away at his residence late on Wednesday night. He was 79.
Dravid senior is survived by his wife Pushpa, and sons Rahul and Vijay.
According to Rahul’s long-time friend and currently the president
of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Anil Kumble, Sharad Dravid
was not well for past four years.
KSCA officials and managing committee has also condoled Sharad’s demise.
Sharad Dravid worked for famous jam manufacturing company KISSAN.
Due to Sharad’s association with jams, Rahul soon grew fond of it, and used to carry a bottle of jam in his bag.
Once, his friend Javagal Srinath noticed a bottle of jam in Rahul’s bag, and famously nick-named him ‘Jammy.’

Sharad’s wife Pushpa is a former Professor of Architecture in University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).
Sharad was initially
against the idea of Rahul taking up cricket as a profession, but
relented later. His illustrious son didn’t disappoint him either,
finishing his career as one of the true legends game has ever seen.
Sharad Dravid, in what
happened to be his last interview, disclosed that for him, as a father,
the proudest moment was to see Rahul make his international debut at
Lords.
Rahul didn’t disappoint either, scoring a classy 95 on debut.
Cricket runs in the family for Dravids. Sharad’s elder brother played alongside CK Nayudu for Holkars.
Sharad used to take Rahul to show him his uncle in action; Rahul Dravid fell in love with the gentlemen’s game ever since.
