Shot-putter P Udayalaxmi fails dope test, removed from India's Asian Athletics Championships contingent

Pune: In a matter of great shame for sports in the country, an Indian shot putter P Udayalaxmi tested positive in a dope test conducted by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA).
Udayalaxmi was part of the Indian contingent for the Asian Athletics Championships at Pune. Following the revelation, the Athletics Federation of the country has decided to remove the athlete from its contingent at the championships.
Udayalaxmi had got gold in the National Inter-state Athletics Championships in June. This however is the second occasion in which the shot-putter had failed a dope test, which could lead to a life ban on her.
India has had the ignominy of its athletes failing dope tests earlier as well. In 2010, 3 members of the women's 4X400 metres relay team that won gold at the Commonwealth Games at Delhi, Ashwini Akkunji, Sini Jose and Mandeep Kaur were found to have failed the dope test.
Other Indian ahletes Juana Murmu, Priyanka Panwar, Tiana Mary Thomas, shot-putter Sonia and men's long jumper Hari Krishnan Muralidharan all had tested positive in NADA tests.
