Cheer for Indian football fans as planned tounament on lines of IPL could bring David Beckham to the country
Pune: Here is some special news for the Indian football fans. Soon they would be able to see the legendary David Beckham, in the flesh, performing for them. Indeed if everything  goes according to plan, not only the former England captain, but internationals like Michael Owen and Thierry Henry would be found showcasing their wares on Indian soil.
 
This initiative to bring the world-renowned stars to India is part the All India football Federation's (AIFF) plans to start an Indian football league, on the lines of the glamourous Indian Premier League cricket. In this thew AIFF is being financially supported by its business partner IMG Reliance and talks are underway with these legends so that they can be there when the event starts, possibly next year.
 
Informed sources said that all the three superstars would be the ambassadors of various team franchises and would be taking part in exhibition matcheipls during the league.

An AIFF official said that if all things go according to plan, the dream of every average Indian fan to see World Cuppers, with their own eyes, performing in front them. The official said that Beckham and Henry have already committed to IMG for spreading the popularity of football in  various regions of the world. 
 
Many former and present global football superstars had visited India in the past anmd some had even taken to the field, notable among them being Pele, Diego Maradona, Lonel Messi, Gerd Mueller, Branco, Romario and others.

The recently retired Beckham, as part of his commmitment with IMG to spread the football culture across the world had visited China and it is thus being expected that he will agree to visit India and take to the field.

The AIFF is in constantb talks with the Western Indian Football Association (WIFA) and the tournament, if it happens will be staged in the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai and the Balwadi stadium in Pune.
 
A similar such franchisee-based tournament was to be held in West Bengal some years back, which would have featured stars like Hernan Crespo and Nuno Gomes, but it did not come about in the end.
