Every
year for a fortnight, tennis fans all over the world have their eyes set
on the grass court where the world’s best tennis player battle against
each other for the most coveted title, Wimbledon championship.
Well Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and
widely considered the most prestigious. It has been held at the All
England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877.
It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), the
others being the Australian Open, French Open (Roland Garros) and US
Open. Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game's
original surface, which gave the game its original name of "lawn
tennis".
So, a few days ahead of this year's Wimbledon Championships, we have picked for you the most shocking moments of Wimbledon
Nude show for Sharapova
In 2006, during a quarter final match involving Maria Sharapova and
Elena Dementieva, a suspiciously well-presented young man, pranced
naked on to Centre Court.
The final streaker, 1996
Richard Krajicek and MaliVai Washington were standing by the net,
posing for the finalists' traditional pre-match photograph, when a
female streaker dashed from one end of the court to the other, naked
except for a tiny pinafore, which she flipped up as she passed the
players.
The female streaker was just 23 in 1996, when she became the first female streaker in the history of Wimbledon
Kiss to the ball girl
Sometime players lose their cool during the intense moments of the
game. Something similar happened with Time Henman during the 1995
Wimbledon match.
Furious after one shot, Henman hit the tennis ball with all the power and the ball hit a ball girl on the court.
After winning the match, Henman gave a bouquet of flowers and a kiss on the cheek to the girl to apologise.
Serena on cloud 9
In 2012, after winning the women’s Wimbledon championship Serena Williams made a historic jump for the shutterbugs.
Roger Federer cries like a baby
The unpredictable English weather has given the Centre Court a lot
of drenchings over the years. It got another when Roger Federer won for
the fifth time in 2007 – and lay on the grass sobbing uncontrollably.
He won in 2008 and 2009, too, but thankfully managed not to cry quite so
much.
2011 Wimbledon Women’s champion
Petra Kvitova, won the 2011 Wimbledon Women’s championship beating
World number one Maria sharapova, and instantly burst into tears.
Beating Serena
Defending champion Serena Williams lost her 4th round match to Marion Bartoli.
Djokovic eats grass
Serbian star Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon for the first time in
2011, and celebrated in an unusual way and started eating the grass of
the Centre Court after winning the match
Maria’s screaming
Women players have come under fire for making a bit of a racket
thanks to some of the “grunts” that accompany strokes. Prime offender
is Russian Maria Sharapova who at her loudest has hit 103.7 decibels.
That’s louder than a small aircraft landing and as loud as an ambulance
siren.
Love all
Former ladies’ number one Steffi Graff married former men’s number
one Andre Agassi in October 2001. So who better to play mixed doubles
together to celebrate the opening of the Centre Court roof? They may
have lost to Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters, but still proved they are
the perfect match. “She moves better than me, and she looks better than
me,” Andre said of Steffi. It must be love-all.
