Divi-Purav a step away from reaching Wimbledon

London: After Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the Wimbledon qualifiers here on Monday, leaving the Grand Slam bereft of an Indian challenge in men’s singles category, Divij Sharan and Purav Raja defeated Flavio Cipolla of Italy and American Wayne Odesnik 6-2 6-4 to reach within sniffing distance of a Wimbledon berth in men’s doubles event.
The Indian pair had an easy first round outing, where they broke Odesnik's serve in the very first game.
They again broke him again in the fifth game and went on to win the set.
In the second set, Divij and Raja broke Cipolla's serve at two-all, and that lead stayed with them, comfortably winning the match.
The Indians play Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer and Jiri Vesely of Czech Republic in the final qualifying round on Wednesday.
A win would ensure the pair a ticket to represent India in Tennis’ marquee event, set to start here on Monday, June 24.
