Champions Trophy 2013: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka - As it happened...

NEW ZEALAND: Over: 36.4 II Score: 139/9

Malinga bowled an excellent last over which was played equally well by Southee. For some reasons, with four needed from 14 overs, Dilshan was brought back into the attack. Both the batsmen took a single each and then Dilshan bowled a wide as the batsmen ran a single pulling off a nervous win.

NEW ZEALAND: Over: 35 II Score: 134/9

The Kiwis need 5 runs to win when Kyle Mills was run-out by Thisara Perera. Southee ran for a single and Perera’s throw from mid-on missed the non-stiker’s end but went to hit the stumps at the striker’s end and Mills wasn’t expecting the throw. Meanwhile Lasith Malinga once again proved how dangerous can he be in the death overs. After dismissing Brendon McCullum he also got the wicket of Nathan McCullum off an inswinging yorker. After picking two wickets, Nathan also played a good knock of 32 runs. The Kiwis now need 5 runs to win with a wicket in hand.

The Kiwis added 21 runs in the last five overs and Brendon McCullum was dismissed by Malinga off a slower yorker that knocked the off-stump. New Zealand now need 24 runs from 20 overs, and the way Malinga is bowling at the moment, it isn’t going to be easy.

And Lankans continue to dominate the proceedings as the Kiwis managed to score just ten runs in the last five overs and lost the wicket of Vettori who was dismissed by Malinga. The Black Caps now need 59 runs from 30 overs with four wickets in hand. Brendon McCullum is still at the crease and all eyes would be on him as he is a match-winner.

NEW ZEALAND: Over: 15 II Score: 70/5

The Kiwis are now in big trouble after losing their top 5 wicket for just 70 runs. They added just 11 runs in the last five overs and lost two wickets of Martin Guptill (25) and James Franklin (6). The Lankan bowlers are doing pretty well to defend their paltry total.

And the Lankans have been all-out for a paltry 138 runs. Nathan McCullum’s eighth over proved to be decisive over as he dismissed Kumar Sangakkara and Eranga. Sanga was caught at short third man as he mistimed a shot he wanted to dispatch over extra-cover. McClenaghan who has been exceptional today picked up his fourth wicket, bowled Malinka to wrap the Lankan innings. This is a nothing score and the Lankan bowlers will have to bowl their heart out.

SRI LANKA: Over: 5 II Score: 23/1

Janith Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan opened the innings for Sri Lanka after their captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bat first. New Zealand skipper Brendan McCullum opened the bowling with Kyle Mills. The Kiwis were off to a terrific start as Mills removed Perera with the first delivery of the day. It was short of a length delivery and Perera edged it to the slip cordon. McCullum dived and took a blinder to help his team get the first wicket. Perere went back for a duck. Two runs and a wicket came in the over. Kumar Sangakkara came in at no. 3. Mitchell McClenaghan bowled the second over. Off his sixth delivery, Dilshan scored the first boundary of the innings. Nine runs were scored in the over. However, off the next came just two runs. The second delivery of the fourth over was bowled short by McClenaghan and Dilshan pulled it away for his second boundary. Five runs came in the over. Off the sixth delivery of the fifth over, Sangakkara scored his first boundary through covers. From it, Sri Lanka managed five runs.

TOSS: Sri Lanka have won the toss and will bat first.

Their morale sky high after a 2-1 series win over England, New Zealand would look to carry their good form into the Champions Trophy when they clash with Sri Lanka in a Group A match here on Sunday.

Sri Lanka have an overwhelming record of winning 10 of their last 11 ODI matches and six in a row against the Kiwis but the Black Caps would back themselves to reverse the trend particularly when their batsmen are in superb touch.

Sri Lanka: Thisara Perera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Mahela Jayawardene, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews(c), Lahiru Thirimanne, Shaminda Eranga, Kushal Janith Perera, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga
